VOICES FROM UKRAINE

"The Sky Is Open. Voices From Ukraine" is an archive of works by artists from Ukraine, created after 24th February 2022.

On that day, Russia attacked Ukraine again – a full-scale war began, with the aim of completely destroying Ukraine’s statehood, erasing the country’s name from the world map.

Some artists have left Ukraine, especially women, mothers with children, but many have stayed and do not plan to leave because they know it is still their place. They face problems and fear – their lives are under constant threat, rockets and bomb drones can reach anywhere, including places that have no military significance…

Palianytsia means bread. In classical sense, it means large-sized round wheat bread, baked in an oven. At the start of the war Russia unleashed against Ukraine, the word «palianytsia» became a symbol, since Russian occupiers are unable to pronounce it correctly. It became a shibboleth, distinguishing friend from enemy without mistake…

Everyone understands their mission during the war in their own way. With the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, some people joined the army to defend the country, some became a part of the volunteer movement and began to help displaced people and victims, some simply tried to save their own lives and the lives of their loved ones…
